A heat gun variety of wrapping machine is a hand-held device which uses heat and air to seal plastic around a product. This model of machine is intended for smaller volume jobs with great precision. Typically, the plastic wrapping is sealed by a sealing machine around the product, then the gun is used to pull the air from the packaging. Simultaneously, the heat gun heats the plastic so it forms tightly to the object. This type of shrink wrap is best used for CD's, DVD's, soap, candles, or other small items.

Sleeve wrappers are another type of shrink wrap machine which is more suited for large items, such as dishwashers or furniture. These are used by high-volume facilities, such as wholesale warehouses. The machine wraps the product in a large piece of circular plastic and then seals it around the sides. The top and bottom of the object are left exposed, which makes stacking easier and more even.

Vacuum sealing shrink wrap machines use various sized plastic bags that are sealed around the product. The machine then removes all the air from inside the bag. This shrink wrap process decreases the volume of more malleable products, decreasing the shipping cost of things like pillows, clothing, or other such goods. This also makes storage much easier. Vacuum shrink wrappers are more often used in small businesses or retail stores.

Larger businesses or food industries often times use continuous band sealers. These shrink wrap systems move very quickly and are able to stamp text onto the plastic packaging as it is sealed onto the product. This works well for labeling food or beverages. The labeling is done by an embossing device attached to the sealer, either horizontally or vertically.

A shrink wrap tunnel system is an automatic conveyor belt which runs through a tunnel. The product is first put in shrink wrap material, then sent through the machine. Inside, the tunnel uses forced hot air to seal the packaging plastic wrap. The package exits the machine perfectly wrapped. This machine is very quick and efficient.

For wrapping magazines or newspapers, mail bagging wrapping systems are the best shrink wrap option. They roll the material in the plastic wrap then roll the product over a wheel that is heated. This seals the plastic tightly around the publication, ready for delivery.

The L-bar shrink wrap system works well for small-volume, high-quality projects. Either automatic, or manual, the L-bar system uses shrink wrap plastic on rolls that are cut as the product moves past on a conveyor belt. An electric impulse creates the precision cut and sizing. Oftentimes the L-bar is paired with a shrink wrap tunnel system. The full automation of this machine means packaging happens quickly and with little effort or waste.

For very large items, shrink wrap turntables take much of the effort out of packaging. The item is placed on the turntable and then is turned by the machine as an attached arm holding a roll of plastic wraps the item tightly. This machine works well for pallets of boxes or other products. The turntable can handle very heavy weight, even up to several thousand pounds. These shrink wrap machines can also be adjusted for different wrap resistance strengths. It also can be adjusted to simply wrap at an even level, or gradually up and down for a more thorough wrap.

There are variations on the turntable for different size jobs, such as a free standing arm which can be manoeuvred around the package by hand. There are also smaller, handheld shrink wrap rollers that can be carried around the package or pallet.
